Culture Shock Therapy: Getting the Suits to Use Your CMS

Jaz-Michael King has been advising and helping companies integrate CM solutions since 1996, including Fairchild Publications, IPRO and Medicare. Jaz has watched CM packages lose credibility as feature creep sets in, watched content acquisition teams disintegrate, and tried to embed Open Source solutions wherever feasible, applicable and relevant, with varying success.

The goal of my presentation is to spend twenty minutes presenting my experiences getting companies to use CM tools - what kinds of problems we encountered, where the process breaks down, what features are sorely needed etc., and the other half of the time I'd like to open up the floor and just take questions from the developers and others who want to know what can be done to streamline getting their product into the workplace, the reasons why so many companies are scared of Open Source and what the most usual points of failure are.

I think there's a lack of real-world feedback regarding successful deployment, and I have a varied experience with all kinds of corporate cultures and departmental politics that I believe would be of value to CM developers and marketers.

I work with medium-sized enterprises mostly, up to 1,000 employees, although I have worked with larger organizations. I chair the Medicare/SDPS Web Strategies Workgroup, and am familiar with many of the available OS CM packages, popular and otherwise. I currently webmaster for 4 or 5 OS CM-driven sites.
