Open Source Controlled Vocabulary

An Open Source Controlled Vocabulary

The usual model for vocabulary creation is to have a group of experts study the organization and then give it a vocabulary to use. In this talk I'll discuss a system we are developing at the University of Washington Information School that takes a different approach. We want to create a system that fosters an open and constructive dialog that leads naturally to an agreed-to and comprehensive vocabulary. We call the result a managed, rather than a controlled vocabulary. In this talk, I would like to review the issues behind a managed vocabulary, overview our study and progress to date, and inspire a discussion on the issues and implications of managed vocabulary.
